A iconic self portrait based artist who pushes feminism in the industry. One woman band.
Cindy is an American artist, she is known primarily for photographic self-portraits where she depicts herself in many contexts and various imagined, comedic, or not, characters. These characters are in their own paradox, as not even one of her self-portraits are actually of her actual self, they are 40 years' worth of “her” as these paradox characters. In these "self-portraits" she plays the protagonist, being the only seen person in the art, she stands alone. This is an iconic feminist statement. She is also in control of the entirety of the process: she plays photographer, actor, stylist, costumer, prop and/or stage production, she simply does it all. Cindy however has been known to be resistant in calling herself a feminist, she calls herself instead a post-feminist, and wants to break all the over sexualisation of women in the media and fine art and her post-feminist views mean she believes in more than the first, second and third wave of feminism and strive towards the next stage in gender progression and post feminism is simply in favour of the defeat of societies rigid gender role and expression expectations.

As a feminist my self it is so important for me to ensure I steer my research of artists to an even mix of all genders. Women however are so under represented in all media in a positive intellectual light, so searching extra deep for female artists is super important and I am glad i was able to share the wonder of Cindy Sherman and many other female artists on my blog page.

Cindy really inspires my practice in the industry, performance art has always been something so near and dear to me, as I grew up around professional actors with my dad being a director, I have always wanted to be involved in the theatre/ performance in some light so entering into the art world its beautiful that I can merge the two; to create movement and questions from a piece of art. Transforming and using the body as canvas is an amazing skill and such a true form of fine art as every single person has a body they can dress and moderate to their desire, some people just do not take the leap to do so but its so available to express yourself on your natural born blank canvas.
