Sandy Powell is the icon of costume design in queer films. She also has amazing hair.

Sandy Powell a three-time Oscar winner was nominated up for best costume design for her work in Carol, which is a beautiful story set in the 1950s with impeccable 50s fashion. The story of Carol follows Cate Blanchett as a well-off middle-aged Women. While her marriage is in the midst of divorce falls in love with a much younger photographer Therese. Sandy describes Carol as being able to afford the latest 1952 fashion and she is seen on screen in a light fur coat. "There's something about rich people wearing light colours that denotes luxury and sophistication,". Therese is seen in a cute beret and Powel took inspiration from 1950s street photography of artistic young people

Another queer film costumed by Sandy is Orlando 1993, where it follows the story of an Elizabethan man who owns an estate with a magnificent home on it and is told during a visit by the queen that he can keep it forever - but only if he always remains fresh and ageless. So, he does. We follow them though a journey of gender transformation and never aging, viewing their experiences through four centuries with the eyes of both sexes. It really makes the audience what it means to be born as a woman or a man and in what period.

There is something so interesting about Fashion design to me as you really need to understand and become the characters to know what they would pick for themselves if they were real. Sandy creates effortless looks and her designs prior to creation are amazing and really make both well-loved icon queer films.

Some back ground about Sandy is that she studied theatre design in London at the Central School of Art and Design and completed a foundation course at Central Saint Martins and Grew up in Brixton London.

Powell was never too keen to go into fashion as she feels that “Fashion is making clothes not for characters, just for people,” and she was always much more intrigued by theatre and film, she enjoys telling stories and making those characters come to life rather than just placing pretty clothes on pretty people which is completely respected by me, I think the world of theatre and film is so magical and getting to learn and respect the people who are behind the scenes and really bring it all together just adds to that magic and passion.
